The special case of the Bauschinger effect is theoretically analyzed. In the Bauschinger effect, the resistance of a material to plastic deformation decreases after preliminary straining of the opposite sign. The behavior of binary Cu-based solid solutions during high-pressure torsion (HPT) is theoretically analyzed for this purpose. During HPT of binary Cu-based solid solutions, a steady state appears after a certain number of plunger rotations. Using phenomenological Landau theory, a model describing sample behavior under alternating straining is developed. Decomposition of the HPT torsion torque into linear and nonlinear components makes it possible to determine the contributions of elastic and plastic deformation. Understanding the transition to the steady state in the dynamic equilibrium between defect formation and defect elimination is essential. The results show that application of the Bauschinger effect makes it possible to reach the steady state at a much lower number of plunger rotations.
