This commentary reviews microbial screening and synthesis of bio-vinylpolymers using itaconic acid derivatives, suggesting innovative material development.
taconic acid possessing a vinylidene group is a bio-vinyl compound produced by fungi. Because of its unique structure, itaconic acid is used worldwide for manufacturing materials such as biobased plastics. Therefore, isolation of a more suitable and high-titer itaconic acid and its derivatives producers from nature is desired. This commentary reviews the recent studies concerning a novel structure-based microbial screening method for vinyl compound discovery, DISCOVER(direct screening method based on coupling reactions for vinyl compound producers), and synthesis of new bio-vinylpolymers consisting of an itaconic acid derivative, 10-hydroxyhexylitaconic acid, produced by a fungus screened by DISCOVER. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of synthesis of bio-vinylpolymers using naturally occurring itaconic acid derivatives.
