A study explores the role of geographical indications in promoting local economies, suggesting pathways to sustainable development.
Vision Viksit Bharat@2047 aims to transform India through the development of the local economy. The geographical indications play a vital role in protecting indigenous knowledge and promoting sustainable resource management. GI tagged products have essential components to develop the country with an inclusive economy and global competence. It is linked with regional development by generating employment, reducing poverty, ensuring equity, and strengthening the local knowledge system. The study has incorporated different GI products of West Bengal to find out the contribution of GIs to development. It has been found that some products like Darjeeling Tea, Nakshi Kantha, Dokra, and Patachitra have high value with consumer awareness and export viability, while certain textiles and artisanal crafts are lacking visibility. Institutional gaps exist in the management of certain products with community-level monitoring. Co-operative-based modules and public-private partnership (PPP) can be adopted for the better management of the GI products, which can further ensure regional development at the maximum level. Adoption of digital marketing and modern technologies can emphasize the products to be visible to a larger number of consumers with maximum profit. This requires awareness and skill generation at the local level, where the producer can easily adopt such technologies. The way towards Vision Viksit Bharat is embedded upon such developmental goals where geographical indications propose better futuristic models of development with inclusivity, sustainability, and global reach
