Magnetometer survey uncovers historical features in Gloucestershire, suggesting industrial activity.
Detailed magnetometry was carried out within two survey areas using a SENSYS MAGNETO MX V3 6 channel cart-based system along 0.5m traverses collecting data at 20Hz. The results indicate the presence of a number of linear and rectilinear ditches and discrete features, some associated with areas of burning as well as possible structural remains. These features are located within an area of weakly magnetic debris, indicative of spreads of occupational material and/or magnetically thermoremnant material relating to industrial activity. A further group of discrete features have also been located, these may also have an association with industrial activity, but it is also possible that the strongly magnetic responses could relate to buried ferrous objects. A group of anomalies in the eastern part of the site lack a coherent morphology and a number of discrete pit-like features have been found dispersed across the site. Strongly magnetic debris close to the north-western corner of the site relates to material used to infill a former post medieval quarry, but this has also been spread along the western edge of the site where no quarrying has been mapped.
