Venous thromboembolism incidence was 5.3 per 10,000 hospital admissions (0.07 per 10,000 children), presenting predominantly in infants under 1 year and teenagers, with 96% having associated medical conditions and 90% having two or more.
Thrombi occurred in the lower venous system (n=79), upper venous system (n=50), or as isolated pulmonary embolism (n=8), with central venous lines present in approximately 33% (n=45) of cases.
Thromboembolism-related mortality was 2.2% (n=3); recurrent thrombosis developed in 23 children and postphlebitic syndrome occurred in 26 children, with no significant bleeding complications observed.
