Summary One metatarsus of each of four laying and twelve non‐laying hens was fractured. Medullary bone was entirely absent from the unfractured metatarsi of all birds and from the fractured metatarsi of the non‐laying birds, with the exception of one which proved to be on the point of laying. Medullary bone formed a thin layer over the entire endosteal surface of the fractured metatarsi of laying hens killed 10 and 15 days after the operation, but little or none appeared in the fractured bones of hens killed 5 or 7 days after fracture. The results of this experiment lend support to the suggestion that the blood supply, is an important factor in determining whether or not a particular bone develops medullary bone, but since the amount of medullary bone induced in the metatarsus by fracture was much less than in bones in which it is normally present, it seems likely that a local factor is also involved. Compared with their unfractured homologues, the fractured metatarsi gained in weight, while the femora and tibiae on the fractured side lost weight. Three hens which were operated on but not killed each developed a spur on the fractured shank, but the spur papilla on the unfractured shank remained undeveloped. It is suggested that the increased vascular supply to the fractured limbs was the factor primarily responsible for spur development.
