Archaeological evaluation identifies a fire-pit at Teandallon, suggesting careful planning for future excavations.
An archaeological trial trench evaluation was carried out ahead of the remaining 6 phases of a proposed housing development at Teandallon, Evanton (Highland Council Planning references 19/05404/FUL, 22/03972/FUL). The requirement arose as the development site has the potential for buried archaeology. The fieldwork was carried out between the 24th April and 4th May 2023. A total area of 3,850 m2 was excavated under direct archaeological supervision, forming a 10% sample of the remaining undisturbed areas. One archaeological feature was identified during the evaluation. A well-preserved fire-pit at the western end of Trench 18 occupied a central location on the upper flood-plane of the River Sgitheach. It is understood that this part of the site is not due to be developed/disturbed as part of the current development scheme. No further archaeological mitigation is recommended across the primary phases of development. In the event of any and all groundworks taking place outwith the defined construction phases, an archaeological watching brief is recommended.
