Does amiodarone effectively and safely treat life-threatening dysrhythmias in children?
Amiodarone is effective for life-threatening dysrhythmias in children with a low complication rate, but long-term biochemical risks warrant preference for curative surgery or devices when available.
Requires caution with long-term pediatric amiodarone despite efficacy; leaves open its role versus curative surgery in refractory cases.
G illette PC, et al : Amiodarone in children . We found a high rate of success in a variety of tachydysrhythmias and a low complication rate in our study of amiodarone for the treatment of life‐ threatening dysrhythmias in 12 children. The incidence of side effects appears to be lower in children than in adults. However, due to the risk of incidence of biochemical abnormalities in the long‐term use of amiodarone in children, caution should be used. We recommend direct, potentially curative surgery or devices as they become available in preference to amiodarone .
