Key Points

  • The aim is to understand how Ni, Co, and Fe catalysts on γ-Al2O3 influence carbon nanostructure formation during dry reforming of methane.
  • Low-temperature dry reforming of methane experiments
  • Comparison of carbon growth mechanisms over Ni, Co, and Fe
  • Characterization of carbon structures produced
  • Ni produces filamentous carbon through a tip-growth mechanism.
  • Co leads to graphitic carbon deposits due to surface diffusion.
  • Fe shows no catalytic activity and does not promote carbon formation.

Abstract

Reducibility of Ni, Co, and Fe on γ-Al 2 O 3 governs both DRM activity and nanostructured carbon growth: Ni yields filamentous carbon via tip-growth, Co forms graphitic deposits via surface diffusion, and Fe remains catalytically inactive.
