Research explores living anionic polymerization of vinyl monomers, suggesting improved polymer characteristics and challenges in sequence regulation.
In this paper, the recent advances in anionic polymerization were explained. In particular, the topic of living anionic polymerization of novel vinyl monomers was focused. The living polymerizations of styrenes possessing protected functional groups and electron-withdrawing acyl group were achieved by the suitable molecular design. The polymers carrying bulky adamantyl groups showed the high glass transition temperatures. In the cases of para-divinylbenzene and 4-halostyrenes, the addition of common salts was effective to stabilize the polymerization system. High anionic polymerizability of exomethylene monomers was realized compared with the acyclic counterparts. Finally, various challenges to regulate the monomer sequences in the anionic polymerization were introduced.
