Evaluation identifies resistant teak clones to combat pest damage in timber plantations, suggesting management strategies.
Teak leaf skeletonizer, Eutectona machaeralis Walker is a prime defoliator of Tectona grandis L.f., causes severe damage like epidemic defoliation of teak plantations. One hundred and sixty seven clones of teak belonging to ten States of India, were evaluated for possible natural resistance against this pest, during 1988-1991. The four year study revealed that the clone ORANR-3 of Orissa State was the most resistant. The remaining clones were ranked as highly resistant (17), resistant (28), moderately resistant (38), least resistant (30), moderately susceptible (32), susceptible (13), highly susceptible (6) and most susceptible (2). These findings indicate the existence of a resistance phenomena in teak clones and suggesting the possibility for managing this pest through planting the resistant clones.
