I'll admit that I am not fawith architectural innovations, and so going into this book, I knew I would learn a lot.Indeed, that was the case!The their while walking around Barcelona; they couldn't help but admire the unique architectural contributions of Antoni Gaud (1852Gaud ( -1926)).Truly, among architects, Gaud is known as one of the greatest.His distinctive designs bring admirers to Spain from all over the world.Much of Gaud's style is based on nature, which has very few right angles and flat walls.Look at a few pictures of Gaud's buildings and it will be immediately clear what makes his style unique.The geometric features of his work are found in this book.Students of architecture and mathematics alike will appreciate exploring the many geometric elements found at the Sagrada Famlia, Park Gell, and Casa Batll , which are, respectively, a church, a park, and a building that were designed by Gaud and are located in Barcelona.Here is an example of what can be found in this book: look at an archway of a building you are near.Can you determine its mathematical shape?Perhaps it is a parabola or catenary?Admittedly, I have never looked closely enough at most arches to tell.It turns out that while many arches are neither of these shapes, both parabolas and catenaries are found in Gaud's structures.You can find quadric surfaces in his work, too!I'm not familiar with a book that features geometry in architecture to such a degree, es-
