This paper explores the issue of insecurity as it affects tourism development generally. The paper highlights the socioeconomic benefits of tourism to the importers and exporters of tourism as well as the relationship between tourism and development. It examines tourism development in developing countries in general and Nigeria in particular. The paper describes the indicators of insecurity that tend to undermine tourism development in Nigeria and the various regions in Nigeria where each variable seems to be most prevalent .The paper goes on to list the indicators as: kidnapping, religious extremism, armed robbery, street urchin/ urban violence, touting, ethnic clashes, ritual killings etc. Finally, the paper calls for more proactive measures and synergy among the various security agencies in fighting the cankerworm.
