This study aims to explore how cell proliferation and cell death relate to changes in specific mRNA levels in stimulated lymphocytes.
Lymphocytes from human peripheral blood were stimulated with phytohemagglutinin (PHA).
mRNA levels of sulfated glycoprotein 2 (SGP-2) and ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) were measured 2-6 hours post-stimulation.
A comparison was made between mRNA accumulation patterns of SGP-2 and ODC.
SGP-2 mRNA levels were consistent in resting lymphocytes but showed a progressive decrease upon PHA stimulation.
ODC mRNA levels increased in parallel with the decrease in SGP-2 mRNA, indicating cellular changes during activation.
