ALT-711 reduces pulse pressure by ~5 mm Hg vs placebo in older adults with arterial stiffening.
Why the study?
Arterial stiffening with increased pulse pressure is a leading cardiovascular risk factor in the elderly, and it is uncertain whether ALT-711 improves arterial compliance and lowers pulse pressure in this population.
Does ALT-711 improve arterial compliance and lower pulse pressure in older individuals with vascular stiffening?
RCT (n=93)
randomly assigned
Yes
Does ALT-711 improve arterial compliance and lower pulse pressure in older individuals with vascular stiffening?
Absolute Event Rate: -5.3% vs -0.6%
p-value: p=0.034
The novel advanced glycation end-product crosslink breaker ALT-711 significantly improves arterial compliance and reduces pulse pressure in older patients with vascular stiffening.

Supports ALT-711 for arterial stiffening in older adults; extends evidence for AGE crosslink breakers to human RCTs.
Kass et al. (2001) conducted an RCT in vascular stiffening (n=93). ALT-711 vs. placebo was evaluated on decline in pulse pressure at day 56 (p=0.034). ALT-711 significantly reduced pulse pressure (-5.3 vs -0.6 mm Hg; P=0.034) and improved total arterial compliance by 15% compared to placebo in older individuals with vascular stiffening.
