Finds of rare ammonites clarify taxonomy and distribution in southwestern Crimea, suggesting paleobasin relations.
Rare ammonites were found in the Lower Cretaceous reference section in the vicinity of the village of Verkhorechye (Bakhchisaray district, Republic of Crimea). They are upper Valanginian Himantoceras lessinianum Faraoni et al. and Valanginian–lower Hauterivian Olcostephanus densicostatus (Wegner). These findings clarify information about the taxonomy and geographic distribution of ammonites and confirm the existence of a close relation between the Crimean paleobasin and the Western Mediterranean paleobasins.
