Critical examination of AI's impact reveals risks to social life and community in India, suggesting urgent policy action.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming India’s socio-economic and cultural landscape, offering opportunities for efficiency and innovation while simultaneously generating profound risks. This paper critically examines the adverse effects of AI on social life in India, focusing on five key domains: job displacement and economic inequality, privacy and surveillance concerns, bias and discrimination, social isolation and cultural shifts, and ethical and security challenges. Drawing on both global scholarship and India-specific studies, the analysis highlights how automation threatens low-skilled employment, AI-driven surveillance undermines privacy, biased algorithms reinforce caste and gender hierarchies, and digital dependency erodes traditional community bonds. Furthermore, the proliferation of misinformation and cybersecurity risks raises urgent ethical dilemmas. The study concludes that without robust policy safeguards, inclusive datasets, and reskilling initiatives, AI adoption risks exacerbating inequality and weakening India’s democratic and cultural fabric. The findings underscore the need for a holistic governance framework that balances technological innovation with social equity and inclusivity.
