Randomized trial evaluates SmartBiz for efficient business management in local enterprises, suggesting significant operational improvements.
Small local service businesses — including salons, gyms, repair shops, clinics, and tutoring centers — constitute an economically significant segment yet remain largely excluded from the benefits of digital transformation. These enterprises continue to rely on paper records, spreadsheets, and informal messaging applications for appointment management, customer data storage, inventory control, and financial tracking. Such approaches result in preventable scheduling conflicts, poor customer retention, inventory inefficiencies, and an absence of actionable business intelligence. This paper presents SmartBiz, a purposebuilt web-based Micro-Software-as-a-Service (Micro-SaaS) management platform that integrates four core operational modules within a single, cloud-deployed, mobile-responsive environment: (i) Appointment and Booking Management, (ii) Customer Relationship Management (CRM), (iii) Inventory Tracking, and (iv) Business Analytics and Revenue Reporting. SmartBiz is implemented using the MERN technology stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React.js, Node.js) with JWT-based authentication, RESTful API communication, and a Tailwind CSS mobile-first interface. The system was evaluated using a simulated dataset of 150+ bookings and 90+ active customer profiles over a three-month operational period. Results demonstrate 100% scheduling conflict detection accuracy, average API response times below 250 ms under concurrent load, and complete data accuracy in revenue computation. Analytics outcomes revealed a 25% revenue growth trajectory (Rs. 28,000 to Rs. 35,000 over six months), a 78% customer retention rate, and 12% monthly new customer acquisition growth. Usability testing with five real business owners confirmed high ease-of-use scores and measurably reduced administrative workload. Comparative analysis against paper records, messaging platforms, spreadsheets, and enterprise SaaS solutions demonstrates that SmartBiz uniquely delivers comprehensive, integrated business management at a cost and complexity level appropriate for small local businesses. The paper further discusses the system architecture, database schema design, security implementation, performance benchmarking, and a detailed roadmap for future enhancements including AI-powered recommendations, payment gateway integration, native mobile applications, and multi-branch support.
