Randomized trial examines gameplay's influence on cultural attitudes and national pride among Chinese youth, suggesting significant cultural engagement.

Key Points

The study aims to explore how gameplay experiences with Black Myth: Wukong influence cultural attitudes and national pride among Chinese youth.
Survey data collected from 312 Chinese adolescents and young adults who played Black Myth: Wukong.
Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the relationships between gameplay experience, retrospective imaginative involvement, and cultural attitudes.
Self-Determination Theory was applied to conceptualize the gameplay experience based on autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
Need-satisfying gameplay is positively associated with retrospective imaginative involvement (RII).
RII correlates with more favorable attitudes toward traditional culture, increasing national pride.
The findings indicate that the influence of digital games on cultural attitudes persists beyond direct gameplay experiences.
