Twenty-four beagles underwent 4 weeks of rapid atrial pacing and were pretreated with either placebo (Group I, n = 14) or enalapril 1 mg/kg (Group II, n = 10).
Evaluated weekly atrial effective refractory period, P-wave width, left ventricular ejection fraction, and duration of induced atrial fibrillation, followed by quantitative histological analysis.
Induced atrial fibrillation duration was significantly reduced in Group II compared to Group I (3.6 +/- 3.4 seconds vs 59.6 +/- 66.3 seconds, P < 0.05).
Enalapril significantly suppressed interstitial fibrosis (1.9 +/- 2.1% vs 9.2 +/- 8.4%, P < 0.05) and connexin43 expression (1.1 +/- 1.1% vs 5.3 +/- 2.2%, P < 0.05).
Left ventricular ejection fraction and atrial effective refractory period shortening decreased similarly across both groups, and mean ventricular rate did not differ.
