This study aims to assess the long-term effects of ischaemic stroke on neurological, anatomical, and inflammatory processes in mice.
C57BL/6 mice underwent sham surgery or filamentous middle cerebral artery occlusion (fMCAo) and were monitored for up to six months.
Neurological deficits were evaluated using behavioral tests and MRI scans at 1, 3, and 6 months post-intervention.
Inflammatory markers were analyzed in blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and brain tissue via flow cytometry at 1, 3, and 6 months after fMCAo.
fMCAo animals exhibited sustained neurological impairment at all time points (1, 3, and 6 months).
MRI showed significant ipsilateral hemispheric atrophy compared to sham controls (p<0.01).
FACS analysis revealed elevated microglia and CD45+ cells in brain tissue and CSF one month post-stroke, with significant elevations of monocytes in brain tissue at one and six months (p<0.01).
