Abstract

Background: Ophthalmic Pathology has been of paramount importance for the development of medical and surgical Ophthalmology. Unfortunately, many laboratories are being closed down due to short-sighted financial reasons. This lecture aims at demonstrating the continuing significance of this subspeciality even in modern times. Summary: Various examples from different structures of the eye (conjunctiva, cornea, retina) are illustrated to document the relevance of a profound knowledge of Ophthalmic Pathology for the advancement of both medical and surgical treatment. Key Message: The impact of Ophthalmic Pathology even in the era of genetics and molecular biology continues to advance our knowledge substantially on behalf of the best possible treatment of our patients.
