Analyzes NEET trends among youth, highlighting the impact of economic downturns on education and employment outcomes.
Using monthly CPS data from 1992 to 2024, this study examines NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) status among US youth. We analyze how NEET risk relates to demographic, family, and economic factors over the long run. We also track changes in NEET prevalence during the Dotcom Crash, Great Recession, and COVID‐19, and test whether postsecondary education's protective effect shifts after downturns. Results show that higher education and income reduce NEET risk, while marriage and parenthood increase it. Downturns affected age groups differently, and education's protective role weakened following the Dotcom Crash and COVID‐19.
