Why the study?
SARS-CoV-2 genome detection in heart muscle had not been demonstrated, and the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying reported cardiovascular complications remained to be investigated.
This study provides the first evidence of SARS-CoV-2 genome detection in endomyocardial biopsies of patients with suspected myocarditis or unexplained heart failure, highlighting vascular inflammation and small arterial obliteration.
