Standardization of dispensing Chinese patent medicines enhances safety and efficacy in emergency care settings.
The standard “Technical Specifications for Dispensing Commonly Used Chinese Patent Medicines in Clinical Emergency and Critical Care-Part 10: Pills” (T/CACM 1378.10) was approved and released by the China Association of Chinese Medicine on January 11, 2022. The formulation of this standard fills the gap in the standardization of dispensing processes in application of Chinese patent medicines in pill form in emergency and critical care settings, providing pharmacists with a scientific and systematic operational guide. Through literature research, questionnaire surveys, and expert verification, the standard establishes dispensing technical specifications for 9 core technical procedures: purchase and acceptance inspection, inventory management, prescription review, prescription dispensing, prescription verification, drug distribution and medication instruction, medication monitoring, prescription evaluation, and pharmacovigilance. Specific recommendations for medication monitoring, prescription review, and drug distribution instruction are also provided for representative medications such as Huafeng pills, Angong Niuhuang pills, and Suxiao Jiuxin pills. This standard emphasizes a scientific and practical dispensing process and puts forward special requirements for the whole chain management of dispensing Chinese patent medicines, contributing to enhanced safety and efficacy of clinical medication. This article interprets the standard Technical Specifications for Dispensing Commonly Used Chinese Patent Medicines in Clinical Emergency and Critical Care-Part 10: Pills, proposes 20 related suggestions, and demonstrates the rigorous process and core contents of standard formulation, providing a direction for future research and practice.
