Biography highlights the life of James R. Love in Utah, reflecting community and historical changes.
James R. Love at Strawberry Reservoir in Wasatch County, Utah, 2010s. Love was born in Tennessee in 1921 and married Mollie Turner there in 1941. The following year, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. World War II (WWII) changed the course of his life, just as it changed the course of the American West. In 1945, Love was stationed at the Kearns Overseas Replacement Depot in Utah. He came to love the state's natural beauty and moved his young family there in 1946. Utah's Black community dates from at least 1847, but it grew substantially with WWII. In addition to honorable military service, Love worked for thirty-three years at the Salt Lake City Post Office, operated his own barbershop, devoted himself to the Calvary Baptist Church, and was a master fly fisherman.
