The linear relation ϵ = a. γ −1.05 Volts 1a ) has been discussed, using for the computation a the following M.O. approximations: a) the original method of Hückel ; b) the approximation used by Wheland (overlap integral 1/4); c) the non‐bonding M.O. method of Longuet‐Higgins. Substituting in the linear equation the half‐wave potentials of twenty alternant hydrocarbons and the computed roots a, the following mean values of the resonance parameter γ were obtained: magnified image Some conclusions have been drawn about the applicability of these semiempirical methods.
