Use of a new iterative diagonalization technique in self-consistent ab initio linear augmented-plane-wave electronic-structure calculations is reported. It is found that this approach yields a substantial reduction in computing time over conventional approaches to the electronic-structure problem and should make calculations for larger systems of scientific and technological interest feasible.
