Does plasma LDL cholesterol correlate with heart function in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus?
Higher plasma LDL cholesterol is associated with worse left ventricular function in patients with type 2 diabetes, suggesting it may be a modifiable risk factor for heart failure.
This study observed an inverse correlation between plasma LDL cholesterol and heart function in individuals with T2DM. Patients with higher levels of plasma LDL cholesterol had worse left ventricular function. Therefore, plasma LDL cholesterol may be a modifiable risk factor of heart failure in diabetes, but prospective studies are necessary to confirm this finding.

Cheng et al. (2019) conducted a cross-sectional in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (n=118). Lower plasma LDL cholesterol vs. Higher plasma LDL cholesterol was evaluated on Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (p=0.022). In individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus, lower plasma LDL cholesterol levels were associated with a significantly better left ventricular ejection fraction compared to higher LDL levels (58.0% vs. 50.5%).
