Archaeological evaluation reveals construction and coal export evidence at Lydney Harbour site, suggesting historical significance.
Red River Archaeology Ltd. was commissioned by Forrest of Dean District Council to undertake a programme of archaeological evaluation on land at Lydney Harbour, Lydney Gloucestershire. Two trenches were excavated which revealed deposits relating to the construction, use and abandonment of the harbour. Excavation of two evaluation trenches was carried out on the 9th of September 2021 by Red River Archaeology. Both trenches contained evidence relating to the construction of the harbour with Trench 2 also providing some evidence for the use of the harbour to export coal. No structural remains or discrete archaeological features were encountered relating to the use of the harbour.
