Key result
The performance of various left atrial volume indexation methods in predicting all-cause mortality in individuals with overweight or obesity showed no difference by sex.
Why the study?
Alternative left atrial volume indexation methods have been proposed, but there are limited data showing they provide long-term prognostic value in individuals with overweight or obesity.
Do alternative left atrial volume indexation methods predict all-cause mortality better than standard body surface area indexation in individuals with overweight or obesity?

Do alternative left atrial volume indexation methods predict all-cause mortality better than standard body surface area indexation in individuals with overweight or obesity?
The study evaluates the prognostic value of 9 different left atrial volume indexation methods for predicting all-cause mortality in overweight or obese individuals.
No sex interaction in LA indexation performance; leaves open whether any method outperforms BSA indexing for mortality prediction in obesity.
BACKGROUND: Alternative indexation methods for left atrial volume (LAV) have been proposed to achieve better proportional scaling than the current standard body surface area indexation. However, there are limited data showing that these alternative indices provide long-term prognostic value in individuals with overweight or obesity. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the performance of various LAV indexation methods in predicting all-cause mortality in individuals with overweight or obesity. METHODS: and valid LAV, height, weight, and left ventricular ejection fraction. We conducted receiver operating characteristic analyses, including area under the curve calculations, to compare the performance of 9 LAV indices in predicting all-cause mortality. In addition, we performed a survival analysis between LAV and all-cause mortality. CONCLUSIONS: . REGISTRATION: URL: https://anzctr.org.au/Default.aspx; Unique identifier: ACTRN12617001387314.

Madronio et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Overweight or obesity. Left atrial volume (LAV) indexation methods vs. Standard body surface area indexation was evaluated on All-cause mortality. The performance of various left atrial volume indexation methods in predicting all-cause mortality in individuals with overweight or obesity showed no difference by sex.
