We investigate the effects of elastic coherency strains in graphite intercalation compounds. The long-range interaction energies of two-dimensional islands of intercalant are calculated. Using the domain model of Daumas and H\'erold, we show that these strains drive a mixed-stage or randomly staged crystal to pure-stage ordering.
