Key Points

  • This research aims to identify facilitators and barriers to medication adherence in patients on thyroid hormone replacement therapy (THRT).
  • Employed a mixed-methods approach integrating perspectives from patients and healthcare providers
  • Identified significant barriers and facilitators through stakeholder interviews and analysis
  • Examined the interplay of individual, interpersonal, healthcare, and socioeconomic factors affecting adherence
  • Identified top barriers: inconvenient administration times, lack of disease knowledge, and lack of medication knowledge
  • Identified top facilitators: older age, regular follow-up, and positive anticipated outcomes
  • Highlighted that adherence strategies must consider context-dependent and interrelated factors

Abstract

STATEMENTS OF CONTRIBUTION: We employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating perspectives from key stakeholders (e.g., patients, healthcare providers) to explore factors influencing medication adherence in patients undergoing THRT.The top three significant barriers were inconvenient administration times, lack of disease knowledge and lack of medication knowledge. The top three facilitators were older age, regular follow-up and positive anticipated outcomes. The study highlights the interplay of individual, interpersonal, healthcare and socioeconomic factors, emphasizing that barriers and facilitators are context dependent and often interrelated. Implementing effective adherence strategies requires collaborative efforts across stakeholders to address these multifaceted challenges.
