Key result
STZ-based regimens induce diabetes and cardiac autonomic neuropathy in up to ~89% of rats.
Why the study?
Conflicting regimens exist for diabetes induction in animal models, motivating a direct comparison of high-dose streptozotocin versus multiple low doses after a high-fat diet on diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy.

STZ-based rat models effectively induce diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy; extends preclinical tools but leaves human translation open.
High single dose of streptozotocin and high fat diet with multiple low doses of streptozotocin are effective models for studying diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy in T1DM and T2DM rat models, respectively.
Akinlade et al. (2021) studied Diabetic cardiac autonomic neuropathy (DCAN) (n=84). Streptozotocin (STZ) and High-Fat Diet (HFD) vs. Sham control / Standard chow diet was evaluated on Diabetes induction rate (blood glucose >16mmol/L) in T2DM model. High single dose of STZ and a high-fat diet combined with multiple low doses of STZ successfully induced type 1 and type 2 diabetes with cardiac autonomic neuropathy in 76% and 89% of rats, respectively.
