Novel MMP-2 inhibitor MMPI-1154 decreases infarct size in an ex vivo acute MI model.
Why the study?
Does MMPI-1154 reduce infarct size and improve cell viability in neonatal rat cardiac myocytes and ex vivo isolated rat hearts subjected to ischemia/reperfusion injury?

Imidazole and thiazole carboxylic acid-based compounds, particularly MMPI-1154, are efficacious MMP-2 inhibitors that provide cardioprotection and reduce infarct size in preclinical models of acute myocardial infarction.

May reduce infarct size in rat AMI models; leaves open clinical efficacy pending human trials.
Bencsik et al. (2018) studied Acute myocardial infarction. MMPI-1154 (imidazole-carboxylic acid MMP-2 inhibitor) vs. Hydroxamic acid derivatives was evaluated on MMP inhibition and infarct size. The novel imidazole-carboxylic acid MMP-2 inhibitor MMPI-1154 significantly decreased infarct size when applied at 1 µM in an ex vivo model of acute myocardial infarction.
