Evaluates lavender essential oil's effect on pathogen control in cereal seeds, suggesting promising biological alternatives.
Among its various benefits, lavender essential oil is recognized for its antifungal activity against plant pathogens. This study evaluated the effect of lavender essential oil on wheat, triticale, and rye seeds, testing different concentrations on seed germination and pathogen presence. Four pathogens were identified: Alternaria sp., Fusarium sp., Penicillium sp., and Rhizopus sp. Germination decreased significantly to below 1% at concentrations above 0.5% for two of the four pathogens, Alternaria sp. and Fusarium sp. The cultivars showed different responses, with Dumitra and Haiduc being more resistant compared to the other varieties. Overall, lavender essential oil represents a promising natural alternative for the biological control of pathogens on cereal seeds, combining antifungal efficacy with minimal impact on germination at low concentrations.
