Observational analysis reveals greater electron flux increases in the outer radiation belt during CME storms than CIR events, suggesting coronal mass ejections drive stronger particle acceleration.
The authors analyze variations in electron fluxes of different energies of 0.1 to 2 MeV for CIR and CME magnetic storms in October–November 2021 according to data from the GOES-17 satellite and the Russian satellites Arktika-M (no. 1) and Elektro-L (no. 2). The analysis shows that the level of relativistic electron fluxes was noticeably higher during the stronger CME storm than during the weaker CIR storm in both geostationary orbit and lower L-shells.
