Assesses archaeological remains of Nuttall Cotton Mill in Ramsbottom, highlighting industrial heritage.
In July 2023, Oxford Archaeology (OA) was commissioned by RSK ADAS Ltd on behalf of United Utilities, to undertake a Level 3 Historic Building Survey of the extant retaining wall associated with Nuttall Cotton Mill. The work, which was stipulated by Greater Manchester Archaeological Advisory Service (GMASS) and Ramsbottom Heritage Society, as a condition of Historic England Guidance (2016) for the identification and recording of any surviving built heritage structures associated with Nuttall Cotton Mill, was undertaken ahead of the deconstruction and reconstruction of the retaining wall as part of a programme of infrastructure works and was carried out on the 23rd of August 2023. Oxford Archaeology carried out a strip, map, and sample excavation and an archaeological watching brief at the site of Nuttall Village, Ramsbottom, Bury, between November 2023 and May 2024. The works were commissioned by RSK ADAS Ltd, on behalf of United Utilities, and undertaken in advance of and during groundworks related to a proposed storm water storage scheme. The archaeological works revealed features and deposits relating to the industrial use and occupation of the site, associated with Nuttall Mill and Nuttall Village, supporting historic documentation and cartographic evidence. The archaeological works carried out in advance of and during groundworks for the proposed development of the site confirmed the presence of archaeological remains relating to the industrial use of the site, associated with Nuttall Mill and Nuttall Village, as depicted on historic OS mapping. However, given the often poor/heavily truncated condition of the archaeological remains, interpretation is limited.
