Systematic literature review explores themes and knowledge in supply chains, suggesting pathways for future developments.
Technological advancements aligned with sustainability and resilience requirements, as well as, a greater focus on human‐centric perspectives, are creating significant transformations in supply chains in this decade, bringing them to a more developed stage. Considering that the subjects of Supply Chain 4.0 (SC4.0) and Supply Chain 5.0 (SC5.0) have evolved significantly in the last few years, this research aims to investigate the main themes and their main knowledge discussed in the extant literature related to these two subjects, as well as, the methodologies adopted to support these studies. Considering this aim, a systematic literature review (SLR) was adopted as the research method of this study. Ninety‐eight articles specifically approaching the subjects of SC4.0 and SC5.0 have been selected. From the analysis of this sample of articles, 12 approached themes were identified, which by their in‐depth understanding it was possible to create a knowledge map about SC4.0 and SC5.0, which shows the evolution towards more developed supply chains. This research makes a relevant contribution to the literature by creating an understanding of the current status of themes and knowledge linked to SC4.0 and SC5.0. Also, this understanding contributes to the potential view of the basis for the next industrial revolution, Industry 6.0 in supply chains (Supply Chain 6.0). From a practical standpoint, it provides relevant insights to supply chain practitioners through the themes and knowledge map proposed, serving as a guide to design and implement SC4.0 and SC5.0 initiatives.
