Key result
High-intensity ICUs are not linked to lower in-hospital mortality compared to low-intensity ICUs.
Why the study?
The study was conducted to examine the association between high-intensity type ICUs and in-hospital mortality in adult ICUs in Japan.
Does high-intensity type ICU staffing reduce in-hospital mortality in adult ICU patients?
Cohort (n=65,395)
Yes
Does high-intensity type ICU staffing reduce in-hospital mortality in adult ICU patients?
Effect estimate: OR 0.96 (95% CI 0.88-1.05)
Absolute Event Rate: 8.7% vs 9.9%
p-value: p=0.36
High-intensity ICU staffing is not associated with reduced overall in-hospital mortality in Japanese adult ICUs, but may significantly reduce mortality in postoperative patients.
High-intensity staffing was not associated with lower overall mortality; leaves open potential postoperative benefit for prospective confirmation.

Endo et al. (2025) conducted a cohort in Adult ICU patients (n=65,395). High-intensity type ICU vs. Low-intensity type ICU was evaluated on In-hospital mortality (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.88-1.05, p=0.36). High-intensity type ICUs were not significantly associated with reduced in-hospital mortality compared to low-intensity type ICUs in adult patients (OR 0.96).
