Key result
Cardiologist intervention based on CHD risk is linked to ~43% fewer 1-year recurrent strokes.
Why the study?
Secondary prevention of stroke and cardiovascular disease is important, but the effect of cardiologist intervention remained unknown.
Does cardiologist intervention reduce stroke recurrence within 1 year in patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke?
Cohort (n=1,757)
No
Does cardiologist intervention reduce stroke recurrence within 1 year in patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke?
Specialized lifestyle and risk intervention by cardiologists significantly reduces 1-year stroke recurrence in patients with first-ever acute ischemic stroke.
May support cardiologist-led risk intervention after ischemic stroke; leaves open need for randomized confirmation before practice change.

Miyamoto et al. (2024) conducted a cohort in Acute ischemic stroke (n=1,757). Cardiologist intervention (counseling and lifestyle advice) vs. No cardiologist intervention was evaluated on Recurrent stroke within 1 year (p=0.007). Cardiologist intervention based on 10-year coronary heart disease risk significantly reduced recurrent stroke within 1 year to 4.6% compared to 8.1% without intervention.
