As we shift from traditional fuel-powered cars to battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs), there is an urgent need for a sustainable supply of raw materials for making batteries. The ocean floor is a vast and largely unexplored region home to various mineral resources. Seafloor nodules are small potato-shaped rocks with high concentrations of minerals such as manganese, cobalt, and nickel, essential in producing EV batteries. This article explores how microwave and RF technologies can assist in collecting and processing these nodules to address the critical raw materials (CRMs) supply crisis. It discusses the advantages of microwave/RF-assisted collection and transportation methods over traditional practices, including reduced environmental impact and improved efficiency. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of developing innovative and sustainable solutions for raw materials sourcing, with microwave/RF-assisted collection and microwave/RF-assisted transportation of seafloor nodules as a promising option to meet this challenge.
