Key result
AF affects ~67% of hemodialysis patients with devices, with dialysis episodes linked to lower potassium.
Why the study?
The timing of atrial fibrillation occurrence and related factors in hemodialysis patients with cardiac implantable electrical devices were evaluated.
Does the timing of hemodialysis affect the occurrence and burden of atrial fibrillation in patients with cardiac implantable electrical devices?
Observational (n=24)
No

Answers are grounded in this paper and cite their sources.
Hemodialysis patients with cardiac implantable devices have a significantly higher risk of atrial fibrillation during dialysis, which appears to be associated with lower pre-dialysis serum potassium levels.

Aoki et al. (2021) conducted an observational in Hemodialysis patients with cardiac implantable electrical devices (n=24). Hemodialysis (exposure) vs. Non-hemodialysis periods was evaluated on Atrial fibrillation occurrence and burden (p=<0.01). Atrial fibrillation occurred in 66.7% of hemodialysis patients with implantable devices, with significantly higher occurrence during hemodialysis (p<0.01) linked to lower pre-dialysis potassium.
