Trial trenching identifies medieval field furrows and undated pits in Weddington, suggesting little archaeological significance.
A programme of trial trenching was commissioned by CgMs Consulting, on behalf of Barratt Homes Ltd, on land previously subject to a geophysical survey but in which no certain archaeological anomalies had been identified. In most of the trenches the basal parts of furrows from an open field system of medieval to early post-medieval date were recorded. Three large former ponds depicted on the geophysical survey had been backfilled with modern brick. A small cluster of undated pits at the south end of Trench 8 seem most likely to have been natural features. No significant finds were recovered from the trenches.
