Geophysical survey identifies archaeological anomalies in Norfolk, suggesting historical significance for mineral extraction planning.
Between 17th February and 17th March 2020, Archaeological Solutions Ltd carried out a magnetic gradiometer survey on c.15.3 hectares of land at Horstead Quarry, Horstead with Stanninghall, Norfolk (NGR TG 2529 2018; Figs. 1 and 2). The survey was carried out in conjunction with a DBA (Higgs 2020), in order to identify any archaeological remains and to provide further information to inform the LPA in determination of the planning application for proposed mineral extraction. The survey identified a number of weakly positive linear anomalies of possible archaeological origin. These were the possible fragment of a ring ditch (1) also identified through aerial photography (HER 50756), other linear anomalies (2-4) which also correspond with aerial photography data (HER 50757), a linear anomaly (5) which appears to represent the continuation of an undated ditch excavated in the quarry to the west (39676.HWS; Bingham and Podbury 2020) and two slightly diffuse positive anomalies (6-7) running parallel to the western and southern boundaries in the south-western corner of the survey.
