Obesity and Type 2 diabetes in children may cause an early peak in arterial maturation followed by a rapid decline in arterial compliance, leading to earlier cardiovascular disease.
The authors hypothesize that early elevation of arterial compliance in obese children may precede a rapid decline, leading to early cardiovascular disease development.
May prompt earlier vascular assessment in obese diabetic youth; hypothesis-generating for longitudinal arterial compliance trials.
In Brief Recent work showed that arterial compliance may be elevated unexpectedly in obese children, attributable to accelerated growth and maturation. We hypothesize that children with obesity or Type 2 diabetes may reach peak arterial maturation earlier in life and then experience an earlier, and potentially more rapid, decline in arterial compliance, leading toward earlier cardiovascular disease development. Increased arterial compliance in obese children may precede an early decline in this measure of cardiovascular function.
