ABSTRACT: Drawing on recent scholarship and grounded in concrete classroom examples, this article demonstrates the ways in which ChatGPT can simplify complex texts, generate grammar-based songs, and create interactive, code-based games that reinforce language learning. It also critically examines the ethical, environmental, and pedagogical risks of Generative AI (GenAI). While acknowledging that empirical research in this area remains limited, the article argues that GenAI, when used strategically and with teacher oversight, can serve as a flexible, time-efficient tool that expands the possibilities of second language instruction. Though focused on French, the design principles discussed may have broader applications across languages and educational contexts.
