Key result
Dapagliflozin is linked to a ~75% higher rate of functional class improvement in elderly HF patients.
Why the study?
Chronic heart failure remains a leading cause of mortality, disability, and recurrent hospitalizations among elderly patients, prompting an evaluation of the efficacy of dapagliflozin in this population.
Does dapagliflozin improve clinical, functional, and laboratory parameters in elderly patients with chronic heart failure?
Observational (n=60)
Does dapagliflozin improve clinical, functional, and laboratory parameters in elderly patients with chronic heart failure?
Dapagliflozin added to standard therapy for 6 months improved functional class, exercise tolerance, and laboratory parameters while reducing recurrent hospitalizations in elderly patients with chronic heart failure.
May support functional class gains with dapagliflozin in elderly HF; hypothesis-generating, requires RCTs before practice change.
Chronic heart failure remains one of the leading causes of mortality, disability, and recurrent hospitalizations among elderly patients. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of dapagliflozin in elderly patients with chronic heart failure based on clinical, functional, and laboratory parameters. The study included 60 patients aged 60–76 years who were divided into the main and control groups, with 30 patients in each group. Patients in the main group received dapagliflozin at a dose of 10 mg/day in addition to standard therapy for 6 months. Comprehensive assessment included echocardiography, lipid profile evaluation, estimation of glomerular filtration rate, determination of C-reactive protein level, six-minute walk test, and quality of life assessment. Patients treated with dapagliflozin demonstrated improvement in left ventricular ejection fraction, lipid profile, glomerular filtration rate, reduction of C-reactive protein levels, increased exercise tolerance, and improved quality of life. The rate of recurrent hospitalizations was 6.7% in the main group versus 20% in the control group. Improvement in the functional class of chronic heart failure was observed in 46.7% and 26.7% of patients, respectively (p<0.05). The obtained results indicate significant cardioprotective, nephroprotective, and metabolic effects of dapagliflozin in elderly patients with chronic heart failure.

Kurbanov et al. (2026) conducted an observational in chronic heart failure (n=60). dapagliflozin vs. standard therapy was evaluated on Improvement in the functional class of chronic heart failure (p=<0.05). Dapagliflozin added to standard therapy improved the functional class of chronic heart failure in 46.7% of elderly patients versus 26.7% with standard therapy alone (p<0.05).
