Fifty-two consecutive athletic individuals who were not able to perform the sport of their choosing, despite previous surgical treatment in thirty-seven, intensive rehabilitation of all fifty-two, and use of a derotation brace by thirty-five, were treated by the Five-One operation. Half of the patients resumed playing their sport brace-free, while one-third returned to their sport wearing the brace. There were nine (17 per cent) failures. Previous operations, infections, a loose somatotype, and failure to restore muscle power postoperatively were associated with failure.
