Why the study?
Regional segmentation of the left atrium is still under investigation, and dividing the left atrium into anatomical regions is needed to better evaluate the effects of AF.
A novel automatic algorithm successfully segmented the left atrium into seven anatomical regions using CT data from 10 AF patients, providing a foundation for future regional functional analysis.

May enable regional LA function studies in AF; leaves open larger validation and clinical utility.
Differently from the left ventricle, the regional segmentation of the left atrium (LA) is still a matter of investigation having the LA attracted the interest of the scientific community only recently. In this study, a new automatic approach for LA regional segmentation was proposed. An approach to divide left atrium into welldefined anatomical regions to better evaluate the effects of AF on different regions of left atrium is proposed.Up to now, we have tested this approach on 10 AF patients.Based on the qualitative evaluation of an expert electrophysiologist, our algorithm correctly segmented the LA in regions in all our patients. In the future, these anatomical regions will be helpful to assess the deformation of left atrial tissues in different parts of LA.
